Canada has staked out a prominent place on the frontiers of machine-learning research, with deep-learning pioneers such as Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio nurturing talent in Toronto and Montreal. Challenges remain in commercialization — the process of converting lab work into the next Shopify or Google.

What should you expect:

Vector is hosting a 2-day workshop, 2 hours each day, for Fastlane companies and Vector’s research community on IP Fundamentals and IP Strategy, driven by real world examples and business cases.

  • The participants receive reading materials before the session on (1) IP Fundamentals and on (2) IP Strategy & Development. We encourage participants to read up on materials before the session to increase time available to go through the case study.
  • During breakout sessions the participants are encouraged to (a) apply knowledge obtained to solve common business challenges on IP and/or (b) consider how this knowledge can be applied outside of the program.
  • The participants will receive assignments to complete after the session at their own time. Office hour is made available for participants to meet with the lecturer to discuss the solution of the assignment
  • To complete the course, participants who have attended all sessions are required to complete after the workshop a graded quiz (20 questions) with 80% of correct answers. Once the course is completed successfully, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion.

Learning outcomes:

  • To acquire fundamental knowledge on Intellectual Property (IP) in the AI domain
  • To build understanding on how to develop an IP strategy
  • To learn from real world examples via best practices and case studies

By the end of this workshop, the participants will be able to develop comprehensive IP strategy and/or adjust current strategy, have a good understanding of grants/credits available to encourage IP commercialization journey.
